The Women’s Society is proud to partner with Townsville Hike & Explore to deliver women only hikes. The Hike & Heal series invites women of all ages and backgrounds to step away from the pressures of everyday life and reconnect with themselves and others in the outdoors. Each hike creates a relaxed and welcoming environment where conversations about mental health and wellbeing can happen naturally.
Led by the experienced team at Townsville Hike & Explore, all hikes are guided by trained professionals who safely navigate the trails, allowing participants to simply enjoy the experience and focus on connection.
The program offers a variety of adventures to suit different fitness levels, ranging from beginner bush walks to more challenging waterfall hikes and day trips exploring the natural beauty of Magnetic Island.
Importantly, the sessions are completely free, ensuring that women who may be experiencing isolation or financial barriers can still access the benefits of community and the outdoors.
The Power of Nature for Mental Health
There is growing evidence that spending time in nature can have a powerful impact on mental health. Research shows that people who spend little time outdoors are more likely to experience higher levels of stress, anxiety, depression and mental fatigue.
Regular contact with nature can play an important preventive role in mental wellbeing by helping to reduce stress and improve overall quality of life. The mental health benefits of physical exercise are already well known, and when that exercise takes place in natural environments — such as bushland, parks or coastal trails — the psychological and cognitive benefits can be even greater.
Simply put, spending time in green spaces can leave us feeling happier, calmer and more energised.
Strengthening Social Connection
While nature supports mental wellbeing, connection with others is equally important.
Social isolation and loneliness have been linked to a wide range of health risks including high blood pressure, heart disease, anxiety and depression. Building supportive social networks plays a key role in protecting both our mental and physical health.
Activities like hiking and walking provide a simple but powerful way for people to connect. Sharing the experience of a hike allows participants to talk, listen and support one another while enjoying the outdoors.
Hiking with others also helps people feel part of a community. Whether participants attend with friends or arrive knowing no one, many leave with new connections and friendships.
One of the most beautiful aspects of the Hike & Heal program is that it welcomes women of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, creating a supportive environment where everyone feels included.
Moving for Physical Health
In addition to the mental and social benefits, hiking is also a fantastic way to support physical wellbeing.
Regular physical activity helps prevent and manage many chronic health conditions and plays an important role in maintaining overall health. Walking and hiking are accessible forms of exercise that allow people to move their bodies while enjoying the natural environment around them.
When combined with the mental and social benefits of being outdoors with others, the impact becomes even more powerful.
Building Community, One Step at a Time
Through Hike & Heal, women have the opportunity to build friendships, share stories and support one another while discovering some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Townsville region.
For many participants, the hikes become more than just a walk in nature — they become a place where women feel safe to open up, laugh, reflect and reconnect.
The Women’s Society is incredibly grateful to Townsville Hike & Explore for their partnership and commitment to creating safe and supportive spaces for women to connect.
Together, we are proving that sometimes the most meaningful conversations — and the strongest connections — happen on the trail.
